It’s so sad to say we’re losing another local favorite — Lucy & Leo’s, which is located in the very cozy second floor of Midtown Reader. The one good part: “It’s not Covid related,” said owner Paula Lucas. “It’s a personal new adventure.”
I talked with Paula and she can’t yet reveal her new venture but it’s not related to the food industry.
I’m sure all the fans of Lucy & Leo’s are happy for her but weepy at the thought of saying goodbye to Paula and all those delicious baked goods. I could eat a dozen of the mint chocolate cupcakes or strawberry with fresh cream all by myself. Right now. And then there are those wonderful cookies, cakes and other treats.
Saying goodbye is not easy for Paula either.
“It’s bittersweet indeed,” she said.
Her message to her fans: “How absolutely grateful I am to be a part of this local and extended community. It’s been our heart for these 12 years. I’m sad but I’m excited for new adventures. I’ve met so many friends and families — it’s been a blessing.”
Paula launched Lucy & Leo’s, Tallahassee first cupcakery, with her partner Jean Bates. She is no longer handling the books for the business and, since January, has worked at Woodlane Cabinet Co.
From TaMaryn Waters of the Tallahassee Democrat: “Lucas, the baker, and Bates gained national fame after appearing on the Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars” in 2011. Yet, their story hasn’t been all frosting and sprinkles.
“It’s relocated twice. About two and half years ago, Lucas and Bates nearly sold the business when money grew tighter. And tighter.
“Now, Lucy & Leo’s — named for the duo’s Basset black lab mix and American bulldog mix — will end where it began: the site of the Midtown Reader, 1123 Thomasville Road.”
Lucy & Leo’s will be open until Sept. 26. Paula said she will have some events in the meantime. You can buy up a bunch of your favorite cupcakes now! They freeze.
A sad but fond farewell, Lucy & Leo’s.
