Growler Country is back — in new digs

Look for Cuban sandwiches, craft beer and live music

If you’re like so many fans, including me, you’ve been eagerly awaiting the opening of the new Growler Country Tavern & Grill location for about two years.

The good news: Growler is having its grand opening on June 12, after two previews held on June 9 and 10. It’s hard to duplicate the down-home, folksy feel of the original Growler site on Capital Circle, but I think Growler devotees, and newcomers, will feel right at home at the tavern’s new digs at 8110 Killearn Plaza Lane in the northside of Tallahassee.

Growler’s menu includes the grill’s popular Cuban sandwich, my favorite in town. We tasted a sample of the sandwiches on Tuesday night and it was as good as I remember (I’ve included a picture of the full sandwich from past visits).

Other items include tacos, burgers, salad, Buffalo shrimp, black and blue chips, wings, fish or chicken and chips and a twist on the Cuban sandwich called the TLH Cubanito Picantico. With more items to come.

Along with its varied selection of craft beer, cider and wine, Growler’s will serve cocktails such as an Old Fashioned, mojito, margarita and espresso martini. To answer a reader’s former question, yes, Growler does indeed offer growlers in two sizes — 32 and 64 ounces.

For now, hours will be 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Fridays, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturdays and 11 a.m to 10 p.m. on Sundays.

While it was often difficult to park at the former Growler’s on Capital Circle, this new venue, in the former location of the Pro Bank Building, offers about 100 parking spots.

The Growler tavern is located on the second floor of the building. The first floor, being finalized, will be an attraction, with a focus on families, called Jurassic Park Y’All , which will specialize in pizza, games and lots of dinosaurs, including animatronic ones.

Owner Mario Fernandez and his family also noted that they will eventually bring the original Growler’s back to Capital Circle but not in the original location.

Details to come but for now, let’s appreciate Growler’s folksy atmosphere and good food in its new venue.
