About Tallahassee Table

Breaking bread together is one of our most social human activities, and I’m convinced that food is the key to knowing a place and its people.

Here in Tallahassee and the surrounding area, we may not have, in sheer numbers, the dining choices some other locales have, but there’s a very vibrant — and growing — food culture here.

I hope you’ll help me, and you, grow with it. I welcome your comments and suggestions.

We devoured spanakopita (spinach pie) at @saharaca We devoured spanakopita (spinach pie) at @saharacafetlh on a recent visit and it was delicious, light and crisp. Other specialties include gyro wraps and platters, kebabs, chicken Shawarma, grape leaves and fantastic fries -- don't miss the garlic-kissed Greek and Lebanese versions. We ended with a plate of luscious baklava. If you haven't been lately, it's worth the trip to Sahara.

Loved these mussels at beloved, family-operated Z. Loved these mussels at beloved, family-operated Z. Bardhi’s, which has been open in Tallahassee for more than two decades. The white tablecloth restaurant is located in a charming cottage with a lovely, covered outdoor patio, both good choices for dinner or weekend afternoon lunch. We enjoyed our mussels in a white wine sauce with tomatoes and garlic and grilled Tuscan bread as an appetizer followed by eggplant florentine, seafood ravioli and lasagna. Can’t wait to go back!

But one of my top choices is the dosa. It resembles a rolled crepe or pancake with a paper-thin crispness. You’ll find more than 30 full-size dosas at dinner, including fillings of potatoes, chicken, onion masala, cheese, eggs and vegetables. Lots of intriguing dishes to discover! At 1234 Simpson Ave., 850-402-9993 (off Magnolia).
Lucilla’s co-owners chef Joseph Richardson and p Lucilla’s co-owners chef Joseph Richardson and partner Lara Hooper knocked it out of the park for what they called a soft brunch opening on Sunday. The stuffed French Toast was fantastic -- two large pieces of vanilla-custard battered challah topped with lots of candied pecans, sliced strawberries and a drizzle of maple syrup.  Everything we ordered was delicious, including our fried oysters; mushroom frittata served with a large salad and crisp fingerling potatoes; and crab cake Benedict with a mound of garlicky spinach and fingerling potatoes. I can't wait to go back! 🍞
What looks like a bagel and isn’t a bagel? The J What looks like a bagel and isn’t a bagel? The Jerusalem bagel. It’s thinner and elongated and it’s not boiled before it’s baked.
These treats are made by Quincy chef Chris Wagner, owner of Rocky Soil Farm with wife Kiona. I ordered  them on the Red Hills Small Farm Alliance Online Market but Wagner often brings the bagels and baked goods to the Tallahassee Farmers Market. Jerusalem bagels are usually eaten with a dip like hummus or a spice mix. Don’t judge, but we smeared some cream cheese on top, with smoked salmon and capers on the side. It was a kind-of cross-cultural experience. 🥯
The dish shakshuka is one of several fun dishes yo The dish shakshuka is one of several fun dishes you'll find at brunch on Saturdays and Sundays at Liberty Bar & Restaurant. Wake up to the wonderful spicy aroma of the African-influenced tomato sauce, with two poached eggs, onions and peppers, topped with feta cheese and served with several slices of sourdough made next door at The Hawthorn Bistro & Bakery. Other brunch dishes at Liberty include eggs Benedict, omelets, chicken and waffles, a Scotch egg, Southwest tofu scramble and Kentucky Hot Brown -- another interesting choice with poached eggs. Enjoy! 🥣

It was fantastic! Thanks so much TLH Beef Society and volunteers and all the breweries, food vendors and talented Ben!

Free craft beer from 16 different local breweries. Amazing food trucks, a local oyster famer and the delicious TC Bakery. The soon-to-be famous Ben Flournoy of Quincy (he's only 16) on the 🎤 and 🎸.

This was, undoubtedly, one of the most EPIC parties in Tallahassee history. https://twitter.com/wakullawriter/status/1556080059550769152
