Brew, breakfast and bites

by Tallahassee Table

In case you’ve missed the green banner outside Food Glorious Food, check out what it’s touting. Owners Kevin and Michelle Stout have Beans @ Betton signcreated a casual coffee shop and bar on the first floor of the upscale restaurant.

Kevin said their idea was to generate more traffic and make use of their upstairs space and patio more hours of the day.  “We’re not trying to compete with the places in the area serving a full breakfast,” he said.

Beans @ Betton Coffee House features a limited breakfast menu, along with scrumptious muffins and desserts by Michelle, who’s the pastry chef, Beans at Betton, chicken and wafflepaired with cappuccino (decorated with a cute foam piggy face) and other specialties (Lucky Goat brew) as well as hot tea.

On a recent morning, a friend and I sat at the sleek wood counter and shared a generous plate of chicken & waffle for $13.50, a serving big enough for us to share. The boneless fried chicken was juicy and flavorful, the perfectly crisp crust cooked to a golden brown, with no overpowering seasonings to clobber our taste buds so early in the morning. The light Belgian waffle was dusted with powered sugar and topped with a strawberry, syrup on the side.

The coffeehouse also serves a breakfast sandwich, black bean cakes, Cuban frittata, biscuits and gravy and omelets, choices priced from $6.50 to $13.50. A la carte items, like eggs, grits and home fries with grilled onions, go for $3 each.

We couldn’t resist a slice of moist hummingbird cake with a sinfully Beans @ Bettonsweet icing. A little early morning decadence can’t hurt.

Overall, the combination of quality food, the friendly barista, generous portions and the cozy atmosphere made us want to come back. Soon.

Breakfast is available from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesday to Saturday. You can order lunch from the Food Glorious Food menu until 3 p.m.

You can return to Beans @ Betton in the afternoon (when it becomes Bar @ Betton) for small plates, beer, wine and cocktails from 4:30 p.m. to closing Tuesday to Saturday. You’ll generally find 15 or more dishes, priced from $8.50 to $14, including oyster and crawfish in puffed pastry, house-made ravioli and smoked duck breast.
